The Schneider Line:
This
is the prestige line of Charles Schneider art glass. All researches for coloration, form
and technique used to create the models were developed under this line. Charles Schneider
himself who supervised the whole workshop designed every piece; some even were executed by
him (it is unknown how many, he really made himself). If the piece was not executed by him
the artists had to abide by the exact colors and form specified by
Charles.
Every technique was
used by itself or in combination of one or several others. Objects were sold through the
Schneider brothers own retail store (managed by
Ernestine Schneider) and an international network of exhibitions, high-end
retail stores, jewelry stores or specialized shops. Each piece should be signed
"Schneider" sometimes accompanied by the drawing of a vase
(called amphore in French, meaning amphora) and/or the word
"France" for export pieces. The signature of a specialized shop can also occur
in conjunction of the Schneider name (i.e.: Ovington of New York, De Backer of Brussels,
etc
). Virtually 99% of Schneider pieces are signed.
NOTE: Some exception can be made,
it is however very rare to find a piece unsigned that can truly be
attributed to Schneider. Please be very careful when considering the
acquisition of any unsigned Schneider, as they are rarer than "needles
in a haystack". Furthermore, not every pieces signed Schneider were
really made by the Schneider glasswork. Fortunately, one can usually
recognize these forgeries easily if one has studied this Company as the coloration
and/or form, applications will be wrong.
NOTE 1: A fair amount of reproductions are now
coming out of Romanian glassworks. Unfortunately these forgeries are
getting better. Most of them are only signed "Charder" but a few have been
seen wearing both "Charder" and "Le Verre Francais" signature at the same
time. Some even with only the "Schneider" signature.
It is sad to see that Romanian Companies seem to be the biggest forgers of
Schneider art glass, Daum and Galle. They are clearly talented but obviously
do not seem to care to be only known for fakes. Large companies (which I
will not bother naming as most can easily be found on the internet doing a
bit of research) are profiting from this, while their glass workers earn
"peanuts" making these fakes. |
