The Le Verre
Francais Line:
This trade name was given to two different productions. The early
production of table services and toiletry essentials in colored glass or with external
enameling. The second, which is of most interest to
us, is a range of cameo art glass pieces,
sometimes having applications such as handle/s, foot and stem.
In general,
The
LVF pieces were less
complex, had less
variation of colors and were less expensive than the Schneider line. Pieces could also
have some limited wheel carving. All models/series of the LVF line was designed by Charles
Schneider, however the pieces were not executed by him and a certain amount of leeway was
given to the artists in matter of colors being used for the piece.
These pieces were sold
through a second store owned by the brothers and managed by one of the Schneider sister,
Ernestine. They were also sold through a network of international high-end retail stores,
exhibitions or specialized shops. It is said that 60-65% of the LVF (Le Verre Francais)
line was made for export.
At the exception of the table services and toiletry essentials,
every piece should be signed "Le Verre Francais" accompanied sometimes of
"Charder" and/or "France". A Piece can also be signed with the "Candy Cane" signature,
an embedded tri-color bead of glass representing the patriotism of the Schneider brothers
after the First World War.
NOTE: The table services and toiletry essentials were not signed as they were mostly made
for a clientele of independent artist decorators that would embellish these wares with
external enameling and retail them anonymously or under their own names. There was however
a very minor part of this production done at the Schneider/Le Verre Francais glass shop
that would be directly delivered to the client.
NOTE 1:
All Le Verre Francais art glass production
were cameos (not
speaking of the early production of table services and toilet essentials),
thus all pieces signed "Le Verre Francais" with only internal enamel
powders and no cameo works are all produced by a modern company in
France which has been in existence for a while now and continues to produce
more nowadays.
