Rare Vercais press molded vase in smoky brown

The Vercais Line:
This line was used to create very affordable press molded items, in the Art Deco style of
the times and after the Wall Street crash. It is presumed that this line was created more
as a last resort than really wanted. The crash was felt throughout the world and demand
for costly art glass went belly up, thus the survival instincts of the Schneider brothers
made them adapt to the emergency. This occurrence was felt throughout all sectors of the
arts and luxury goods.
The Vercais line was distributed throughout the same stores as Le
Verre Francais, but these might not have been sold as luxury goods. Every Vercais I have
encountered are signed "Vercais" sometimes accompanied by "Made in
France". According to the rarity of these pieces, one has to assume that this line
wasn't successful as otherwise pieces would abound.
NOTE: No reproduction
of the "Vercais" models has showed up on the antique market, as these are the least
desirable pieces for a Schneider collection. This line still deserves its place in the
history of the Schneider Company. Each piece I have seen were equal in quality to the
more common and abundant Lalique pieces of the series "Coquille" or
"Volubilis" (this is not meant as a criticism as they are plenty of rare Lalique
pieces too). I have now encountered three colors in the Vercais line, smoky brown,
satin white and peach amber. |
